Every ride is great, but the best rides are those with enough time in front of them to prep, plan and make into something more. Anna Grace Christiansen shares what her best rides have in common.
1. Buddies. At least 1, but 3-5 is more ideal so you can relax on a wheel from time to time. The best buddies are into whatever kind of ride you’re into, be it long and epic, or short and specific. Choose good storytellers or at least nice butts. Gender is not important, just be sure they are prepared to enjoy themselves and your fabulous company.
2. Start with coffee and end with a burrito (best with beer). This combo has proven to be nothing but successful in my experience.
3. The essentials. A flat kit, of course (tube, tire lever, mini pump). If it’s a long ride, lights are a good call. (An unexpected adventure is always possible on the bike.) An extra layer like a vest might save you if the temperatures drop without warning.
4. Tasty foods all day. Don’t forget. If you do forget, make peace with the fact that your ride is going to suck pretty hard at some point. Take a sip and a bite every 30 minutes or so, even if you don’t feel hungry or thirsty. If you forget your snacks, eat your friends’ snacks. If you all forget your snacks, stop at a shop and buy snacks.
5. The landscape. Wherever you are lucky enough to ride, there are always many pleasing details to notice on the bike. Maybe it’s a fuzzy faced Alpaca in the field or wildflowers on the edge of the pavement. Mentally catalog these views and vistas. They will come in handy later when preparing for another ride, another adventure, another chance to pedal.
