How does cycling fit into your life? How would you explain your relationship with cycling?
I have just retired from a 30 year career of racing bikes so at the moment I’m trying to get away from the bike a bit – but in the end I still like riding my bike for fun because mostly I like being outside and staying fit. Cycling been in my life since I was six. I raced till last year and experienced amazing things being a cyclist, met amazing people and traveled the whole world while calling it my job.
Favorite places to ride and why:
Mallorca is one of my favorite places to ride because it is just beautiful. I used to escape to Mallorca a lot when I lived and trained in Germany. Now I live in California and I love Highway 1 on the central coast because you have a beautiful view the whole way. There are so many more places and it is hard to really pick just one.
Favorite races to ride and why:
There were a lot of races I loved so again it’s hard to pick just one favourite. I think Flanders and Philly would have to be up there. Flanders is such a prestigious classic and good technical racing and Philly is a town I always loved to go back to. Racing up Manyunk Wall was always fun.
Who do you admire in cycling?
I respect some people in cycling but not one person in particular.
What does the future hold for your cycling?
I don’t really know what my future holds in cycling or otherwise. This year I’m doing some directing with my old team and going on a ride through Canada with Clara Hughes as she raises money for mental health. I’m enjoying having a bit of time to do small projects and to try to find out what’s next for me whether it be in cycling or not.
What does advocacy mean to you? How do you share cycling?
I sometimes like to ride with friends but mostly I really just like going out alone and do my thing. As an athlete I loved training on my own most of the time. Getting out there for long endurance days of 7 or 8 hours on my own was one of my favourite parts of training. I never thought I’d be into Strava but now I love it and use it all the time for riding or running. I guess that’s how I share cycling.
Last book read:
I actually haven’t read a book in a long time. I stopped reading after a concussion when I was told to rest my eyes. I started listening to books on tape but they always put me to sleep. I used to read a lot though and Paul Coehlo and David Sedaris are two of my favourite authors.
Soundtrack to your next ride
I never listen to music while I ride. I prefer just to be out in nature.
Must have media (TV, film, etc.) :
I love movies. Pulp Fiction is my favorite. I love independent movies and always try to catch something good at The Palm theatre in SLO when I’m in town.
Three things you think folks should know about you:
Three things you need to know! To be honest I don’t think there is really anything that important that people are interested in. But…
1. I’m German and I love my country but I’ve always felt more at home in the US
2. The first thing I think about when I wake up in the morning is coffee, then walking the dog.
3. Most people wouldn’t believe this, but I love kids.
Most liked Velocio piece so far
I love the Signature Bib Short and the Light Long Sleeve a lot. It feels nice not having to ride around with logos printed on me. The Wool Long Sleeve Jersey is super nice as well and I love the feeling of it.
