You meet so many different types of people through sport, and especially cycling. You can train for 5 hours with people you have never met, maybe groups of middle aged men on a Sunday club run in the UK or with your new international team mates on your first training camp. When on the road at stage races you will spend pretty much 24 hours a day with the same people for weeks at a time. That taught me to get on with most people and normally be able to find some common ground with everyone, which is key in the real world.
Being in a competitive environment means you can never settle and you’re always looking to find ways to improve. It’s something I’m already taking into my new lifestyle and career. I hate to just follow the pathway and like to try and think outside the box and be proactive with my life.
To always have a goal and work back was so important for me when riding my bike in terms of motivation and achieving goals. Goals don’t happen without measurable steps and progress and for me this could be seen so clearly with sport. I’ve had to learn that this can be applied to normal life. It’s still such an essential skill that transfers into so many job roles or just for scenarios such as planning a holiday!
I think I can put everything I need in my life in one bag and under the 15 kilos that budget airline allow. When you’re moving from one hotel room to another on a daily basis and on the road for months at a time you learn to realise what things you actually need and what things you’re just carrying around for no reason!
Really this is about an understanding for looking after your body. Although sadly I no longer sleep 10 hours a night as I did previously I still realise how important it is to look after yourself and maintain balance in the body. I love sport and being active, and I began running recently, but realised that unless I continue to stretch and use the foam roller I can’t continue because I will start getting injured.
